If you miss climbing rocks like you did when you were a kid, the Mt Woodson hike is for you. In fact, Mt. Woodson was known to the natives as “The Mountain of Moonlight Rocks,” thanks to its post-sunset glowing boulders. And, there’s an extra delicious rock at the end of this challenging hike.
You may have heard of it. Potato Chip Rock is your reward for a heart racing climb to the summit of Mt Woodson. The “chip” is what’s left of a massive boulder and it makes for an outstanding photo opp…one that you’ll have to wait for. Yes, that’s right…there’s usually a line.
The Mt Woodson hike trailhead is located inside Lake Poway Park on Lake Poway Road in—you guessed it—the city of Poway. As you bob and weave amongst the many amateur to mid-level hikers, focus on the ginormous granite boulders and views all the way to Mexico. After you’ve snapped a creative pic on the chip, find a secluded spot to plop down and soak up the views before heading back down the mountain.
